Paul Brady
  Demos photo

Most Paul Brady songs on CD began life as a demo in his home studio. Many of these original demos are still in existence. Quality varies from elaborate multi-tracked almost complete arrangements when Paul was initially learning how to do it and master the technicalities of the recording and arranging process, to later simpler and more immediate performances designed to give an idea of the song to musicians who would later be playing on the final recording. We are now making a selection of these demos available for download as they give a fascinating insight into the way Paul puts his music together.

Sound quality inevitably varies considerably between samples depending on the original recording date. Earlier demos stored on reel to reel tape have suffered more from the passage of time than later ones recorded on DAT tape. Some of these early ones are offered as 'listen only' as are some others for copyright reasons. The majority, however are available as downloads.

Many recordings also ended up as B-sides, extra tracks on CD singles, promotional CDs or finished tracks that never appeared anywhere. The Paul Brady catalogue is not complete without them.

All music below is copyright Hornall Brothers Music.

'21st Century Christmas' demo Written in 2005 w Ralph Murphy for fun (all songs I write with Ralph are for fun!) we sent this to Cliff Richard who we knew liked Christmas songs. to our pleasant surprise he recorded it in 2006 and had a UK and European hit with it (No2 in UK!). This was my home demo.
‘Beautiful Surprise‘ home demo

Written with Ronan Keating at home in Dublin. Paul made the demo later and sings. So far unrecorded for real. This is 'listen' only

‘Beyond The Reach Of Love‘

This is the home demo of the ‘Say What You Feel‘ album track, written with John Scott Sherril in Nashville

'Bruach’ Loch Pontchartrain' A translation into Irish, by the late Prionnsias O Maonaigh of The lakes Of Pontchartrain. Originally recorded by Paul in 2000 for the cd 'Eist: songs in their native language', this is now available for download here.
‘Crazy Dreams Keystone‘ Demo rough-mix

A rough mix from Keystone Studios in Dublin‘s Harcourt St in Dec 1979 of the original demo that became the basis of the recorded version on the cd Hard Station

‘Crazy Dreams‘ (original 1980 single recording)  Although the popular version of Crazy Dreams from the 1981 cd Hard Station was built on a demo begun in Dec '79, this different recording from 1980 was the first version ever released. Recorded in London's Olympic Studios in the summer of that year by John Wood and mixed by Brian Masterson at Windmill Lane it was released as a single that October to accompany the first Paul Brady Band tour of Ireland and was a hit in Ireland. Featuring Peter Van Hooke on drums, Mark Isham on Flugelhorn, Billy Livesy on piano and Mo Foster on bass, it always seemed a little too fast to me and when it came to recording the album I went back to re-work the original demo for the album which cam out the following spring.
‘Cry It Out‘ orig demo

Written with Tyler Hayes and Greg Biecke in LA around 2004 this has yet to be recorded. This is 'listen' only

‘Dancer In The Fire‘ Keystone demo rough mix

A mix from Keystone Studios in Dublin‘s Harcourt St in Dec 1979 of Paul‘s first demo of Dancer In The Fire. Drums Paul McAteer, Bass Garvan Gallagher, Polymoog strings Paul Barret, Piano and vocals Paul Brady. The piano overdub at the end was studio owner Andrew Boland.

‘Designer Love‘

Written with Ronan Hardiman in Dublin in 2006, this has never been recorded by anyone yet. Demo was produced by Ronan in his home studio. This is 'Listen' only.

‘Duncan And Brady‘ Keystone rough mix

A mix from Keystone Studios in Dublin‘s Harcourt St in Dec 1979 of Paul‘s recording of the Leadbelly song Duncan and Brady. Drums Paul McAteer, Bass Garvan Gallagher, Pedal Steel Artie McGlynn, Electric and acoustic guitars and vocals, Paul Brady

‘Duncan and Brady b side 1980‘  Final version from Keystone Studios in Dublin‘s Harcourt St in Dec 1979 of Paul‘s recording of the Leadbelly song Duncan and Brady. Drums Paul McAteer, Bass Garvan Gallagher, Pedal Steel Artie McGlynn, Electric and acoustic guitars and vocals, Paul Brady. This appeared as the b-side of the 1980s single 'Helpless Heart'.
‘Eat The Peach‘ 12"
‘Eat The Peach‘ 7" Single  Written in 1986 with Donal Lunny for the irish movie of the same name, this is a different recording to that which appeared on the film soundtrack. This is a single edit of the Primitive Dance album track. Ian Maidman on bass and electric gtr, Steve Fletcher, keyboards, Davey Spillane on Uileann pipes and myself on electric rythm gtr, vocals, mandolin and tin whistle.
‘Finally It‘s The Right Time ‘(original home demo)  The home demo of the song that appeared as a bonus track in a new recording on the Japanese release of 'Say What You Feel'. Robbie Brennan on drums. written in the early 90s with Pat Alger in Nashville.
‘Follow On‘ demo Dear oh! Fairly laboured original demo of one of my most popular songs. Sorry about the tape quality. Slightly wobbly pitch from time to time. But it‘s amazing how arrangements can change! The official recording of this remains one of my favourite recordings of mine. This is 'listen' only.
‘Follow That Star‘

Written With Gary Nicholson and recorded in his studio in Nashville, this has yet to be recorded for real. This is 'listen' only

‘Gimme Some Feedback‘ demo

Written and demoed back around 1990 this song has never been recorded

‘Good Love‘ (original home demo) This was originally demoed when we wrote it at Bob Theile's place in LA in the late 90s. This is the demo version i subsequently recorded at home. The final version appears on the 'Oh What A World' album
‘Heather On The Moor‘

Originally recorded for an album called The Gathering which was a strangely unfocussed collection put out in, I think, 1979. The album also had tracks from other artists including Andy Irvine, who is playing Mandolin and harmonica here, the late Tommy Potts, fiddler extraordinaire and Peter Browne on pipes. The song comes from the Sam Henry collection of Ulster folk songs and was a big hit in the 1800s in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

‘I Believe In Magic‘ demo

Written in Nashville with Gary Nicholson and recorded in 2000 for the Oh What A World cd, this was the original demo started in Gary‘s studio and finished at home in Dublin

‘I don‘t want to be the one‘ demo

Never recorded by Paul, this was a co-write with Carole King, later covered by Trisha Yearwood

‘I Don‘t Want To Know‘ demo Written with Conner Reeves & Rich Wayland at Miles Copeland's Chateau Marrouate near Bordeaux in the mid 90s, this has yet to be recorded for real. This is 'listen' only
‘I Only Want You‘ (original demo)  Written with Tim Clott, this demo was recorded in his house in Sherman Oaks, LA early in the millennium. I really tried hard to keep close to this sweet feel when I eventually recorded it for real on 'Say What You Feel' in 2004.
‘I Want You To Want Me‘ solo Acoustic version  This was an early solo attempt at this song before the recording that eventually appeared on Spirits Colliding in 1995
‘Just In Case Of Accidents‘ demo

Was still in love with my TR808 drum machine here. And the old spring reverb unit. The difference between this and the recorded version is mind blowing to me now. What a confused guy I was. Sometimes being able to do loads of things is a huge liability. Still, There‘s an urban dislocation to this arrangement that seems appropriate to the time. Very 80‘s, this and i had a lot of fun making it!

‘Light In The Dark‘ (Red Cross Charity for Somalia 1992)  Written for a Red Cross Somalia appeal campaign in the mid 90s, this featured the as yet unknown Corrs on backing vocals. James Blennerhasset on bass, Jimmy Smith on electric gtr, I did the rest...drum program, keyboards, acoustic guitar and vocal. Mixed by Andrew Boland in Windmill Lane, Dublin.
‘Locked Up In Heaven‘ (original home demo)  I made this recording at home a couple of days after the song was written. It was as much to learn how to play it myself as for any other reason.
‘Luck Of The draw‘ home demo

I never recorded this song for real after i gave it to Bonnie Raitt. If I had then this is perhaps how it might have turned out. Recorded at home on Fostex 8 track tape machine in1984, the tape has suffered slightly in the intervening years. The mix is pretty awful too!

‘No Plan B‘ edit

Written with Ralph Murphy, this has yet to be recorded. One of my favourites!

‘Not The Only One‘ first home demo 1982

Still the same crappy old vocal Microphone I‘m afraid. Then I wasn‘t sensitive to those things back then. Feel was king and I still think this feels great, feck the sound quality! This again is a bit wobbly towards the end. Thank God tape has gone the way of the dinosaurs, i don‘t care what any of the 'back to tape' nerds say. This is 'listen' only

‘No Win World‘ demo

Written with Kevin Savigar in LA in the 90s, this has yet to be recorded...finished even!? This is 'listen' only.

‘Oh What A World‘ (original home demo)  A totally different suit of clothes on this original demo of the late 90s to the rootsy r'n'b feel that eventually appeared on the 'Oh What A World' cd of 2000. A good song can take many different arrangements! This was written and recorded at home in my Dublin studio with Will Jennings
'One day Closer To You' demo Written with Ralph Murphy and as yet unrecorded for real.
‘One More Today‘ demo. Written with Ralph Murphy in 2007. demoed at home. paul plays piano and sings. String arrangement written and performed on keyboard by Fiachra Trench. As yet unrecorded
‘Paddy‘s Lamentation‘

Originally recorded for an album called The Gathering which was a strangely unfocussed collection put out in, I think, 1979. The album also had tracks from other artists including Andy Irvine, the late Tommy Potts, fiddler extraordinaire and Peter Browne on pipes. I‘m playing piano here, synth strings and tin whistle. I can‘t remember who did percussion. This is one of the great Irish songs from the American civil war. Indian buck refers to Maize or buckwheat which was sent to Ireland in the famine. Not popular with the peasantry who had never seen it and didn‘t know what to do with it.

‘Rainbow‘ demo

This is a new, as yet (2007) unrecorded song. I sang it live on the Transatlantic Sessions 3 DVD filmed in Scotland in April 2007 released November that year. This was the home demo.

‘Really Gone‘ demo

Written in Nashville with Gary Burr, this has so far been unrecorded.

‘Rear View Mirror‘ demo

Written with Tim Clott and demoed in Dallas this has yet to be recorded.

‘Sail Sail On‘ (Demo)  This was written at home in Dublin with Sharon Vaughn in 2003. I did the demo afterwards in my studio. It has a nice lazy feel to it which suits the title.
‘Steel Claw‘ New Vocal 1999 I was never happy with my vocals on the 1983 'True For You' version of this so when I got a chance to review, remaster my back catalogue in 1998 I re-sang the song over the same recording with a view to including this on the 'best of ' cd 'Nobody Knows. As it happened it never made the cut for that record. Perhaps on best of Vol 2?
‘Stories‘ (demo key B flat)  This song was never recorded for real by me. I gave it to Maura O'Connell who recorded it on her album of the same name. Again all instruments and voices are by myself.
‘The Great Pretender‘ Keystone demo

This is the first demo of this song which was later re-recorded for the Cd True For You. The words changed by the finished version. Don‘tcha just love the bin-lid snare drum sound? ARP Odyssey keyboard again. I had to do things on the cheap and couldn‘t afford a real drummer. I ended up playing everything.

‘The Man I Used To Be‘ (demo piano version)  This and the guitar version below were quick recordings I made for the musicians who would eventually play on the recorded version on 'Say What You Feel'
‘The Man I Used to Be‘ (demo version guitar )
‘The Price Of Fame‘

Written with Ronan Keating and demoed by Paul in Dublin this has yet to be recorded for real

‘The Road to The Promised Land ‘demo

A mix from Keystone Studios in Dublin‘s Harcourt St in Dec 1979 of Paul‘s first recording of The Road To The Promised Land. Completely different feel to the version on Hard Station. Drums Paul McAteer, Bass Garvan Gallagher, Polymoog, Paul Barret, Piano and vocals, Paul Brady

'The Rocks Of Bawn' (Liam O'Flynn album track) From Liam O'Flynn's 1995 cd 'The Given Note' on the Tara label (TARACD 3034) Paul sings and plays keyboard on the Classic irish song 'The Rocks of Bawn'. this is 'listen only'. To purchase or for more information see http://www.taramusic.com/sleevenotes/cd3034.htm
‘The Soulbeat‘ (alt ‘shuffle‘ demo mono version)  I always felt and still feel that this early 80s collaboration with Shay Fitzgerald is a good song and one I never quite got right on the 'Back To The Centre' record. This was a later attempt at home to try it in a different way. One day i'll go back to it and get it right!
The World is What You Make it early rough mix

A mix from around half way through the recording process.

‘Trick or Treat‘ demo One of my fave demos of mine. I now had a Fostex 8 track home recorder and was getting the hand of recording myself at home
‘Trouble‘ first home demo

Yet another home demo version of this song. I was listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder and Steve Winwood at the time! The old upright piano in my house in Dublin‘s Glasnevin sounds so retro now.One of the few times i managed to record it without car horns from outside or the children inside getting on tape. Bass is an ARP Odyssey keybd. Guitar was a Gibson SG standard that I incredibly and regrettably sold later.

‘Trouble Round The Bend‘ Keystone demo Rough mix

From the Dec ‘79 Keystone sessions, Paul McAteer on Drums, Garvan Gallagher on Bass, Paul Brady on acoustic and electric gtrs and vocals. Very different to the ‘True For You‘ cd version

‘Under A Fingernail Moon‘ demo

Written with Ralph Murphy and demoed at home in Dublin, this has yet to be recorded for real

‘Young Love‘ demo

Written with Will Jennings and demoed at his place in Santa Barbara, this is as yet unrecorded.

‘Walk The White Line‘ home demo This song should have been called ‘Back To The Centre‘. It‘s hard listening to this polite demo now. This was early in my home recording. Recently the proud possessor of a Yamaha DX7 keyboard and Roland TR808 drum machine although still no decent microphones, I couldn‘t anticipate how it was to eventually turn out on the cd. A different beast altogether! This is 'listen' only.
‘When Love Comes Tumbling In‘

Written in LA with Dillon O‘Brian and Leah Andreone, Paul plans to record this for real in the near future. This was the original demo made in Dillon‘s place in LA. This is 'listen' only.

‘Working Relationship‘ home demo

This song Paul wrote in early 1982. A quirky comment on the distance in his head between having to deal with lawyers and contracts..and the music he really wanted to be making instead! Never recorded for real, this was a demo he made playing and singing everything himself. Never recorded for real.

‘You Make A Difference‘ (demo of unreleased song)  Written with Frank McNamara as the signature tune of a BBC Northern ireland series called You Make A Difference...honouring local people who have been heroes in their own community, this never featured again. I like it as a song and may go back to it some day. This is 'listen' only.
‘You Win Again‘ demo Rough mix

The Hank Williams song from The Dec 79 Keystone sessions, this rough mix from tape has real clarity and beats the only other existing master from a scratchy 7 inch disc. Paul plays Andrew Boland‘s Gibson Les Paul and has a ton of fun. Paul McAteer on drums and Garvan Gallagher on bass. Mariella Frostrup was the studio tea girl that night!

‘You Win Again‘ (B-side of the 1984 Helpless Heart single)
